Follow your nose to the end of York St and you will be rewarded! Beginning at 3 or 4 am each day you will find Milo Jones – the Painted Baker – hard at work rolling dough and tending to his ovens to bring us the most mouth-watering breads and pastries!
On the daily you can expect loaves (French white, whole wheat, rye, sourdough), baguettes, Portuguese bagels, Irish scones and focaccia. Delicious pastries too are available – Cinnamon Buns (Tues/Thurs), Danishes (Wed), Turnovers (Fri), Croissants (Sat), Pain au Chocolat (Sun). Look out for the extra additions of mission figs, olives, marinated apple and onion, and spicy cheese that can also be baked into his yummy offerings.
Milo has been in the kitchen since he was 14, helping his dad who is also a baker. For many years Milo worked at Arowhon Pines in Algonquin Park and it was this employer that sent him to Paris to take an intensive pastry making course where he took his art to a new level.
Milo has already built an incredible number of connections in St Mary’s and our community, supplying breads to The Boathouse, Alley Cat Cat Cafe, Bluebird, Elizabeth. and soon the Little Kitchen on York. Also, the only olive oil he uses is from Aaron at Olive Your Favourites!
Of special note, the best time to visit is between 9 and 11am to get your pick of the filled baskets!
