Did you know that the Blowes Family has been operating businesses on Wellington St for more than 75 years?
Brian Blowes, owner of Blowes Cards & Gifts and Blowes Stationery & Office Supplies, is the third generation at the helm and now a fourth generation is stepping up!
Stan Blowes bought the building and opened Blowes Books and Gifts in 1949. Bob Blowes partnered with his father Stan in 1953 and in the late 60’s purchased the business from his dad who went into retirement. In 1991, 25-year old Brian stepped into his father and grandfather’s shoes and has successfully carried on what has long been “the” place to go in Stratford for all things cards, stationery and office supplies.
And now the family has opened The Blowes Inn!
Following 20 months of architectural drawings, permits, and contractors, Brian and his wife Becky’s vision has come alive! The two have carefully and lovingly restored and renovated the two floors above street level into 11 units – studios, one-bedroom and two-bedrooms. This time capsule – cut off from the world for more than 70 years when the unused space was boarded up by Brian’s dad – revealed vintage wallpapered rooms, an icebox, straw filled chairs, a clawfoot bathtub and other treasures.
Original brick walls and curved archways in the halls bring a sense of grandeur from time passed. Big windows facing City Hall and Market Square flood the front facing units with light… and entertainment! Each unit contains a full kitchen, laundry facilities and modern decor. Brian’s daughter Julia, who holds a marketing position at the Stratford Festival, is managing the property – check out The Blowes Inn on instagram for more info.
