Talented local artist Janet Hill has opened her delightful studio on Market Place, chock full of her original art across various mediums. Janet best describes her art as depicting “strange worlds” and “cinematic” and “opposite of realistic.”
Janet earned her Bachelors of Fine Art from Queen’s University, a journey she pursued with the encouragement of her parents and her art teacher. Janet came by art almost accidentally in her last year of high school, realizing then that maybe she had some skill she could develop in post secondary school.
There she very intensely studied painting, printmaking and sculpture and ultimately landed predominately on painting.
If you have been around for a while, you may recall her retail store gracing Downie St from 2001 to 2008. Here though her art was simply decorating the walls of her apothecary/bath shop… it was accidental that it was the art that garnered attention!
Janet in 2007 began selling her art online via Etsy and decided to pursue that avenue full time. Now she has come full circle with a retail shop once more but this time wholly focussed on her art. In this day when people are looking for human connection and purchasing “real” art, Janet wants to meet her patrons in real life, too, showing them that her art is “human made.”

At the Janet Hill Studio you will find Janet’s elegant, yet whimsical art in prints, originals, greeting cards, stationary, puzzles and also beautifully (and locally) made cushions in fabrics showcasing her Mansion Girls series. Janet is also a published author and illustrator of children’s books that are available in the shop: Miss Moon: Wise words from a Dog Governess and Miss Mink, Wise Lessons for a Cat Countess. Lucy Crisp and the Vanishing House is a novel for Young Adults.

The Studio also offers Vintage Brocante, unique home dècor items that originated from Europe. Be sure to set ample time aside when you visit this studio as there is so much to see!
