For nearly two decades, Grotto Hair Studio has been a cornerstone of York Street in
downtown Stratford. Owned by Jillian Chambers, the salon began when she and her
husband spotted a “For Rent” sign while on a walk 18 years ago, and they’ve been part
of the downtown family ever since.
More than just a salon, Grotto reflects the heart of downtown Stratford: a place where
neighbours support each other and community means everything. Jillian recalls fellow
business owners stepping in to watch her children at a moment’s notice, describing
downtown as a “people supporting people” environment, something she deeply
cherishes.
At Grotto, sustainability isn’t a trend, it’s a way of doing business. The hair studio is a
certified Green Circle Salon, meaning over 95% of its waste is recycled or repurposed.
Leftover hair colour is returned to the supplier, tinfoil from foils is recycled into bicycle
parts, and even the hair itself is collected and reused. They offer biodegradable
reusable towels that last up to 10 washes, use energy-efficient lighting, and have
installed high-efficiency water taps to reduce usage by 16%.
Jillian’s commitment to sustainability is rooted in motherhood. “I want my kids to inherit
a beautiful Earth,” she says. That passion extends beyond the salon – she and her
family make intentional choices like walking instead of driving whenever possible.
With an unwavering commitment to the planet and a deep love for the community,
Grotto Hair Studio is more than a place to get your hair done, it’s a salon with purpose.
